Joni Burks Secondary Math & Science Department Head

As a graduate of Abilene Christian University, I have been teaching secondary science for almost 30 years. I completed my Post-Baccalaureate Composite Science Certification through course work and field studies at UT Permian Basin, Texas Tech University, Hardin Simmons University, Lubbock Christian University, and the University of Northern Colorado. I have taught 5-12th grade - Life Science, Geology, IPC, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at multiple levels in both large and small districts. As a master teacher I partnered with Lockheed Martin to prepare students for collaboration in the work force. I have also taught different math levels and provided interventions for struggling students to insure graduation. I have been chosen to work for the state in curriculum development and lesson planning. I conducted various teacher trainings.

Having taught my own children for 7 years I believe every parent deserves the same level of commitment for their child.  By integrating differentiated strategies, hands on activities and manipulatives to support student learning I create a positive, engaging classroom experience. Students are challenged. Meeting these challenges increases self-esteem.  I delight in teaching science because it is an expression of God’s majesty. Ultimately, I believe my role as a teacher is a calling that I experience as pure joy.
